[Video] Upgrade to SysKit (from TSL, RDGM, and SMTK)

Our previous server monitoring tools – Terminal Services Log, Remote Desktop Gateway Monitor, and Server Monitoring Toolkit – are now all part of single powerful monitoring tool: SysKit. SysKit is an agentless server monitoring solution for server environments like Windows Servers and Workstations, Remote Desktop Services, Citrix XenApp/XenDesktop, SQL and SharePoint servers, VMWare Horizon, and Remote Desktop Gateway monitoring.  It enables real-time server performance monitoring, tracking of user activities, exploring of application usage and performance, etc.

Sara: Hello everybody, welcome to our SysKit webinar with the topic “upgrade to SysKit“. My name is Sara, I'm customer sucess manager here at Acceleratio, and this is Frane, our SysKit product owner. In this webinar we will show you how to upgrade TSL, RDGM and SMTK to SysKit.

Frane: Hello guys, I'm Frane, the SysKit product owner, and I will be helping you upgrade to SysKit. As you know, we are Acceleratio, a software development company based in Europe, and we produce software for Remote Desktop Services, Windows Servers and Workstations, Citrix servers, etc. All of the above are our clients and all of them are using one or more Acceleratio products.

Sara: I'm going to guide you through today's agenda. First, we have housekeeping rules and more info on how can you ask your questions, which we all much appreciate. After that, we will do a short SysKit overview, tell you how we came to the idea of rebranding, and then do a demo on how to upgrade to SysKit. A recording of this webinar will be available online, as will this slide deck, and all attendees will receive a 30% discount off the SysKit upgrade. At the end of the webinar we will do a Q&A.

What is SysKit?

Sara: I will let you know what Syskit is, although many of you are previous TSL users so this will be familiar to you. SysKit is a powerful server monitoring tool which is focused on helping system admins and consultants in daily work. It performs monitoring of and reporting on your server environments, like Windows Servers, Citrix XenApp/XenDesktop, Remote Desktop Services, Sharepoint and SQL servers, etc. SysKit is a solution for real-time user activity, application usage and server performance monitoring. The server monitoring is agentless so there is no need to install agents on more than one central console.

Server monitoring with SysKit

Sara: Here we have an overview of what you can do with SysKit. There are plenty of reports and even custom reports that give you information about your server environment. They are all exportable, and you can set up intelligent alerting to notify you when you want it to. The server performance monitoring is something we are really proud of; it gives you an overview of your system status and enables you to recieve warnings and set up thresholds to alert you when there's a performance problem. There's also a web application available so you can monitor your server data from anywhere. Also, there's a system audit, so you can monitor user logon atempts, block IPs and review file changes. You can check out all these features and upgrade for free if you have software assurance, or you can download a free 30-day trial.

Rebranding to SysKit

Sara: How was the rebranding of SysKit born? By listening to our customers' needs, we decided to combine previous server monitoring tools into one tool that will provide you with everything you need. There's an interesting story behind the SysKit name and logo. SysKit is a combination of SYStem and tooKIT. The new logo is a cute little blue whale, because “Kit“ means “whale“ in Croatian. We also have products named SPDocKit and CloudKit 365.

Upgrade to SysKit

Sara: The main idea behind SysKit was to create a tool that could monitor all types of server environments, so you would be fully covered by using one single tool. Today we're going to focus on upgrading previous Acceleratio products to SysKit. If you have software assurance you can upgrade to SysKit for free. TSL and RDGM customers can do a fully supported upgrade, and SMTK customers need a new SQL database configuration. More of this technical data will be explaned by Frane in our demo.

Frane: Thank you, Sara. We have here an existing TSL installation on Windows Server 2012, currently monitoring 30 servers. We will use this installation with all its existing configurations to upgrade to SysKit. Close TSL and execute SysKit setup. SysKit will remove the previous installation of the software and do the in-place upgrade of the application. Confirm the EULA and choose whether you want desktop and/or web application installed. For this demo we'll choose desktop application only.

After choosing the install folder, you get a choice of whether only you or all the computer users have access to the software. For the puropose of this demo we'll choose “only you“. Next, you are asked if you have an existing SQL instance, or if you want to create a new database. We will choose existing database, install wizard will unpack all files, and then you just click “finish“. The configuration wizard will detect the previous installation and ask you to upgrade. It will connect to the previous database after we validate the user. This configuration wizard connects to the existing SQL database and upgrades everything from the previous installation. If you have valid software assurance, this upgrade is free.

As SysKit requires a new license, for the first time it will execute as a trial, so you should connect to the customer portal and get an activation key. After upgrading, we have all of our servers and users that we had before ready for monitoring. Let's check user reports, enabling your user activity monitoring. You can track all users, their state, when they logged on to the servers, for how long, etc. When SysKit upgrades it takes some time to connect to the servers, so the performance dashboard will refresh in a while and you will be able to monitor server performance. As you can see, all of our users and servers are here, same as before the upgrade. Now Sara will take over.

Sara: Frane showed you how to upgrade from TSL to SysKit, so all you need to do is follow the instructions and connect to the existing database. Just to recap, SysKit is a combination of four monitoring products, and you can easily upgrade to it if you have software assurance, or you can contact our customer support. We offer a 30% discount for the attendees of this webinar. Download the new version, install it and configure if necessary. If you get stuck, just contact our customer support.


Sara: Now we have some questions from the audience, and we've prepared answers for them. First, a question from Robbie, who has TSL and RDGM. He wonders where SysKit fits in with it and how he can upgrade.

Frane: If you have RDGM and TSL you can easily upgrade both of them to SysKit. You can keep both databases or you can monitor both servers using a single database.

Sara: We have a question from Andy, who is asking how he can install SysKit to monitor six different servers on different locations.

Frane: Now with SysKit you can install the application on only one server, and it will gather data from all remote terminal servers and store all the data in one database.

Sara: Erick has a question about whether his existing e-mail subscriptions will stay after upgrading to SysKit.

Frane: Yes, all the existing e-mail subscriptions will be upgraded in place, as will all the other configuration settings from previous tools.

Sara: Now we have David asking us whether he can use SysKit to see what applications users are running on terminal servers.

Frane: If you go to application reports, you can track application usage and check every application that was executed per user, so all the apps that were active in every session can be seen for each user.

Sara: Heidi is asking us if she can upgrade directly from TSL version 3.5 to SysKit version 7.0.

Frane: All you need to do is download SysKit 7.0 and it will detect any previous TSL version from 2.0 to 6.0. You can upgrade to SysKit from any previous TSL version with no problems.

Sara: David has another question on performance consumption from SysKit.

Frane: David, you probably have lots of servers monitored with SysKit and we recommend you use a dedicated server for SysKit only. If you have more than 100 servers, SysKit requires 8-16GB of RAM. However, there is no performance impact on monitored servers, so SysKit will take only resources from the dedicated server.

Sara: Alex is asking why he can't find previously monitored Citrix servers.

Frane: In some situations, during the upgrade we disable the servers, so you need to go to the servers tab, select the disabled servers and enable them. Now you can continue Citrix XenApp monitoring.

Sara: We have enough time for one last question, and here's Mike asking whether there will be any downtime when upgrading to SysKit and if a system reboot is necessary.

Frane: The latest SysKit requires .NET 4.5.2, and if you don't have it you'll need to install it, and it will require a server reboot. If you already have it installed, no reboot is required for SysKit.
