Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 7

Less than a month ago, Citrix announced the release of Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 7 1808. This is the seventh renaming of our old pal XenApp. Its previous names were:

  • WinFrame (with WinNT 3.51)
  • MetaFrame
  • MetaFrame XP
  • Then MetaFrame XP Presentation Server
  • Presentation Server
  • Then XenApp
  • Then it was XenDesktop 7 App Edition
  • Then it was, again, just XenApp
  • And now it is Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops.

We have supported Citrix since MetaFrame, and we are proud to announce full support for Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 7.

What this ultimately means is that you can install SysKit Monitor on one server, then you can monitor all the different XenApp editions from one location! This reduces the hassle of managing deployments in different farms. You can be sure that we will continue to support all the new Virtual Apps and Desktops, so you can easily unassign licenses from, let’s say Presentation Server, to the latest Virtual Apps and Desktops server in your environment.

SysKit Monitor 9 can collect data from all the different Citrix editions and versions. Many of our customers simply don't want to pay for a Citrix Platinum Director license to view the application and desktop usage reports and they want our third-party solution to monitor the usage and trends of their farm.

Citrix Director doesn't support anything below version 7.6, so if you have XenApp 6.5 or XenApp 6, it is not supported.

Windows Server 2019 & Remote Desktop Web Client

In March 2018, Microsoft announced that Windows Server 2019 will become available in Q3 or Q4 2018. We have worked hard and tested all the available Windows Server 2019 preview versions and we are happy to announce that SysKit Monitor 9 fully supports Windows Server 2019 as well.

This ultimately means that you can install SysKit Monitor 9 on Windows Server 2019 and monitor all Windows servers from one location. The following versions are supported:

  • Windows 2000
  • Windows 2003
  • Windows 2008 and Windows 2008 R2
  • Windows 2012 and Windows 2012 R2
  • Windows 2016
  • Windows 2019

The Remote Desktop Services in Windows Server 2019 will announce the Windows Server Remote Desktop Web Client.

The web client gives end users a more lightweight and cross-platform option for accessing applications compared with Microsoft's native Remote Desktop client. For instance, end users can access applications from anywhere using any browser (HTML5-based browsers). The web client will run on Chromebook, Linux, macOS and Windows operating systems.

SysKit Monitor 9 also supports web clients in Windows Server 2016 and those currently in preview for 2019. When announced publicly, web clients in Windows Server 2019 will be fully supported.

There are rumors that Microsoft will release a multi-user version of Windows 10 that will be aimed at making applications remotely available to a relatively small number of users per machine or per installation. As SysKit Monitor 9 supports VDI and RDS deployments, the multi-user Windows 10 release will be supported if Microsoft announces it sometime in October 2018.

So, the title of our new release is well deserved, as we continue to keep SysKit Monitor up to date with all the latest technology from Citrix and Microsoft!
