SPDocKit and SharePoint usage and stats - announcing the survey results!

In a few days, we will be saying goodbye to 2016 and welcoming a new year. It was a very interesting year for the SharePoint community. Microsoft launched SharePoint Server 2016 as well as Feature Pack 1. We conducted our annual survey to understand better how organizations use SPDocKit and to get a better insight into their SharePoint environments and their plans for 2017.

Before we present the results, we would like to say that we are thankful to everyone who decided to participate and help us with their feedback. Your responses will help us make our tool even better!

Congratulations to the lucky winners of our survey raffle, Nicolas Kramer and Andreas Rakozi, who won Amazon gift cards!

We’re already working on some awesome stuff for 2017!

The SPDocKit survey was completed by current SPDocKit customers, SharePoint consultants and administrators, and users who are using a trial version of the tool. We received very useful feedback and awesome suggestions, and some of them we have already included in our roadmap for 2017, such as restoring SharePoint permissions and Microsoft Project Server reports.

We have 93% happy customers!
We were also happy to discover that a lot of the survey participants heard about our tool from their colleagues and friends. It is great to hear that our users gladly recommend our solutions to others.

Let's jump to the results!

SharePoint usage and deployment in organizations

We asked our respondents about which version of SharePoint they use. Like last year's results, SharePoint 2013 is the most used (37%), and the latest version, SharePoint 2016, is used by 16% of respondents. The usage of SharePoint Online is on the rise (17%) compared to last year, and some organizations are planning to move everything to SP Online in 2017:

  • 37% SharePoint 2013
  • 21% SharePoint 2010
  • 17% SharePoint Online
  • 16% SharePoint 2016
  • 10% SharePoint 2007

When speaking of SharePoint deployment and investment in the upcoming year, currently the majority of organizations have on-premises deployment (55%), but 32% told us that they are planning to roll out to a hybrid environment, while 29% plan to invest more in on-premises farms and servers:

  • 32% Rolling out to hybrid environments
  • 29% More on-premises farms and servers
  • 19% Moving everything to SharePoint Online
  • 20% No plans for investing more in their SharePoint infrastructure

SPDocKit feature usage stats

After analyzing the survey results, we were happy to see that a lot of our long-term users gave us great feedback. Many of them (34%) have used SPDocKit for more than one year and 17% for more than three years. Your feedback helps us to get a better overview of which features you're satisfied with and what we should improve to make the tool even better.

  • The most frequently used feature is still the famous SPDocKit superpower – generating SharePoint farm documentation. This allows you to gather quickly all the farm configuration settings and create a documentation file with just a few clicks!
  • The second place goes to the Best Practices reports, which allow you to audit and validate your farm configuration.
  • Following these are the Permissions reports and management actions, and then the compare wizards, which allow you to track changes and compare farms, web applications, web.config files, and permissions.

When speaking of permissions management, our users mostly use actions that allow them to manage permissions inheritance, manage SharePoint groups, clean up site collections, and manage their admins. Some other useful actions that they find very useful are transfer and clone and managing SharePoint Online permissions.
